Camden Mayor Heather Johnson marked the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising by helping to raise the Tibetan flag over Camden Town Hall on Saturday.

The flag was presented to her by demonstrators from the Tibetan Freedom March before they walked to the Chinese Embassy.

A volunteer of the Tibet Vigil said that the ceremony was held in Camden because many of London's Tibetans work or live in the borough.

Keep the Tibetan flag flying

ONCE again a big thank you to Camden Council for raising the Tibetan flag as part of a Europe-wide initiative, in spite of opposition from the Chinese embassy.

Their spokesperson says the event "severely hurts the feelings of the Chinese people" (Ham&High, March 9).

The Tibetan people have had more than their feelings hurt -
1.2 million were killed, their environment hacked, their culture half destroyed, torture, enforced abortions and sterilisations while they have become a minority in their own land.

If only BP, who are now investing in Petrochina exploiting Tibet's oil and gas reserves to pipe to China, had the same ethics as Camden.
