Camden New Journal 15th March 2001

The Tibetan flag was unfurled on the roof of the Camden Town Hall on Saturday -
despite protests by the Chinese government.

The ceremony, held to mark the anniversary of a Tibetan uprising against China in 1959, was attended by the Camden mayor Heather Johnson and supporters of a movement to free Tibet.

Last week, a Chinese embassy official rang council leader Jane Roberts warning her not to go ahead with the ceremony. But Councillor Roberts told the embassy the council had flown the flag for the last six years and would go ahead.

Flying the Flag: (l-r) Paula Hollings, Simon Gould, Alicia Tomseett, Yangchen Dolkar, Camden's mayor and Tsering Gombo.

What a fantastic stand against China's bullying

AT a time when China is seeking to encourage Western firms to invest in the exploitation of the occupied nations of Tibet it is wonderful to find Camden Council standing firm against the racist apartheid regime.

Mrs Qin the embassy spokesperson mentioned m your article (China warns council over Tibet flag raising, CNJ March 8) is right to suggest that me relationship between China and Britain should be treasured.

Perhaps it would be if China withdrew From Tibet and stopped the systematic distruction of the Tibetan treasures, their culture and environment. Mrs Qin might also consider the planetary concerns posed by China's siting 200 nuclear missiles in Tibet with a range from Moscow to the Pacific, also their latest 50-year plan to blow up a mountain with nuclear explosions and divert the Indus and the Mekong rivers to arid parts of China.

Congratulations to Councillor Jane Roberts, Leader of the Council and to "he Mayor Heather Johnson and team.
