Tibetan flag flies day late

The raising of the Tibetan flag over Camden Town Hall nearly didn't go up as planned when the flagpole got stuck. Council chiefs decided to raise the flag on the roof of the Judd Street building on Monday in honour of the 43rd anniversary of the Tibetan uprising. But the borough's mayor, Councillor Roger Robinson, found the cords used to raise it had been loosened by high winds at the weekend. This is the seventh year running that Camden has decided to fly the colours, despite fierce opposition from the Chinese Embassy. Paula Hollings, of the Tibet Vigil, said: "We went up on the roof and took the flag up. We went through the motions without it actually going up. They had trouble with the flagpole. "It's very symbolic, especially under protest from the Chinese Embassy. Camden is putting itself out more than the British Government is prepared to." The flag, which was eventually raised on Tuesday morning, will remain up for a week.
